A Netflix show about longevity sparked my interest in Okinawa, Japan, where many people live to be over 100 years old. The secret to their health and longevity is said to be Ikigai.

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that translates to “a reason for being” or “a sense of purpose in life.” It represents the intersection of four key elements that bring fulfillment and happiness:

What you love (your passion)
What you’re good at (your vocation)
What the world needs (your mission)
What you can be paid for (your profession)
When these four elements align, you find your ikigai—something that gives you a deep sense of purpose, satisfaction, and joy. It’s about achieving balance in life and doing something meaningful that feels rewarding not just for you, but also for others.

For example, your ikigai might be teaching because it combines what you love (sharing knowledge), what you’re good at (educating), what the world needs (access to education), and what you can be paid for (a teaching job).

Ikigai encourages self-reflection, guiding people to seek harmony between their personal and professional lives. It is often linked to longevity and happiness, particularly in regions like Okinawa, where people tend to live longer, healthier lives.

How do you find your ikigai?
Practicing mindfulness can help you connect more deeply with yourself. By meditating and reflecting, you can identify the four elements that bring fulfillment and happiness to your life.

Is there a specific part of ikigai you’re curious about, or would you like to explore how to apply it in your own life?
