I’ve always tried to never let failure define who I am. When you go through a failure—whether it’s an exam, a project, or a setback in life—the outcome is often fear, anxiety, and disappointment.
But there are several ways to embrace failure. Two of the most important are:
1. Reframe Failure as a Learning Opportunity
Research in Educational Psychology shows that people who view failure as a chance to grow (a growth mindset) are more resilient and perform better over time.
How: After a setback, ask yourself: “What did I learn?” or “What will I do differently next time?”
2. Practice Self-Compassion
Studies from Kristin Neff and others in the field of positive psychology reveal that self-compassion reduces anxiety and promotes emotional resilience after failure.
How: Speak to yourself kindly, as you would to a friend. Acknowledge the pain without judgment: “It’s okay to feel disappointed. I did my best.”
